Bucovina, Painted Monasteries

Romania, with a long and distinguished history is a treasure of culture, art and natural beauty. Despite the hardships and challenges of being a developing country, the beauty of Romania is magnificent in its many monuments, traditions and cultural heritage sites.

Romania is the only place in the world where a group of Orthodox monasteries with their fine exterior and interior frescoes, have been preserved and handed down from mediaeval times, and because of their uniqueness and artistic value, were added in 1993 to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List.

There is, indeed, no other place in the world where such a group of churches, like Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita, Humor, Probota, Putna, with such a high quality exterior frescoes, are to be seen. Using colors like the famous Voronet blue, the green-red of Sucevita, the yellow of Moldovita, the red of Humor and the green of Arbore, the painters (most of them unknown) described the biblical stories of the earth and heaven, scenes from the lives of the Holly Virgin and Jesus Christ, stories of man’s beginnings and of his life after death.

Another group are the Wooden Churches of Maramures, unique examples that combine Gothic style with traditional timber construction. Most of these churches were built during the 18th and 19th centuries, on the place of older churches that no longer exist. The churches are made of thick logs, are quite small and dark inside, and painted with Biblical scenes. The most characteristic features are the tall tower above the entrance and the massive roof that seems to dwarf the main body of the church. They were added on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1999.

Traversed by the waters of the Danube, Romania has dramatic scenery including the beautiful and densely forested Carpathian Mountains, the Black Sea Coast an the Danube Delta which is the largest best preserved european delta.

Dotting the natural landscape are rustic villages where local people live and keep alive traditions for hundreds of years. There is an abundance of religious architecture and medieval towns and castles.

In recent years Romania is rapidly regaining its identity as a popular tourist destination and has a lot to offer to the travelers. Situated in beautiful valleys and on mountain slopes are many summer and winter ski resorts such as Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal, Poiana Brasov and Vatra Dornei.
